I just cribbed this example of the technological device rules from RPG.net because it was cool and fun. Check it out:
I played around with the "Creating Technological Devices" section. It's pretty neat.
Every technology feature a device possesses has a Technology Score (TS), and the overall TS for a device is the highest TS it possesses. For example, if a steam machine has movement TS 4, armor TS 3, and bonus hit points TS 9, it is a TS 9 device.
The maximum TS device a Tinker can create is 1 + Tinker level + 2 from a relevant feat. (e.g. max 21 for a 20th level Tinker making a small device, max 23 for a 20th level Tinker with the Small Device Knack feat making a small device)
Well, the maximum damage per round (not per attack, per round) that a Technological device can do is (TS/3)d6. That's a max of 7d6 at 20th level, nothing compared to the damage potential of an equivalent level melee or missile combatant, or a good arcane caster.
Using Thorium doubles the cost - and thus, construction time - of a device, but it raises the damage cap to (TS/2)d8. 11d8 max for TS 22, that's substantial. So picture this:
Gnomish Tinker 20 with all the relevant feats and technology related skills maxed out. Intelligence 22.
GyroCopter, Mark 8:
Thorium Huge Flying Machine
Armor +20
Additional Hardness 10 (total hardness 15)
Additional Hit Points 140 (total hit points 220)
Cargo Capacity 600 pounds
Damage, Projectile weapon (a very oversized version of the Long Rifle) 10d8
Range Increment 600 feet
Speed: 100 mph
Maneuverability: Excellent (can accelerate or deccelerate 25 mph per round without incurring maneuver checks)
Market Value: 15000
It would take the Tinker about 5000 gp in raw materials and two years to make it on his own. He could save four or five months if he had a few extra thousand gp to spend on helpers.
Our Tinker hero has to make DC 30 Use Technology Device checks to do anything with his machine. He gets a -4 to the roll because the weight of the Thorium reduces maneuverability. But between his rating 23, his +6 bonus from Intelligence, and another +5 he can get from two feats, he can be making that role at a +34. He only fails on a natural 1 (which causes a malfunction anyway).
As long as he has fuel and ammunition, he rules the skies. 100 mph translates to 880 feet per round, so he can close in, take a shot for average 45 points of damage, and leave effective range of most opponents all on his turn. Way cool.
