Roleplaying 40K
When the Black Industries folks first announced the pending 40K RPG (to the surprise of no one) I was a little disappointed to hear that the first incarnation of these would put the players in the role of an inquisatorial retinue. This is probably because my only real knowlege of a retinue came from the miniatures game and I couldn't imagine wanting to be any of those misshapen weirdos.
Then... I read Ravenor. This is one of Dan Abnett's books and covers the adventures of inquisitor Ravenor and his retinue. It's great science fiction and I can completely see playing this group of adventurers. Not only that, it gives you a good glimpse of what a Rogue Trader setting might be like (which is the next game in the series). Each of the retinue brings something different to the group. They all kick serious butt in their own way. When they REALLY get into trouble Eisenhorn can take over their bodies and they immediately become minor super heroes. Cool stuff.
Now I'm going to have to go and find a copy of the Eisenhorn trilogy. Be sure to bug Seth to pick up these books for you if you haven't read them yet.

Haven't read Ravenor. Did read, and still own the Eisenhorn trilogy. VERY good read.
Mark and I once contemplated using the Inquisitor rules to actually hash together a sort of RPG.
I also didn't like the models. The majority of them just seemed silly looking. I wanted to see just a plainclothes guardsman, or whatever...
But I'll be all over the RPG when it comes out...
Although I don't know for sure, from reading Ravenor, I think that both Eisenhorn and Ravenor share at least a couple of characters. Some of Ravenor's retinue used to work for Eisenhorn.
Apparently these guys live for hundreds of years.
Yes they do.
I forget where it talks about it, but most of the Big Guys gets various 'rejuvination therapies' to stay young for long periods of time.
Not to mention most ships have stasis pods for the crew to sleep in for hundreds of years...
So I read more about the 40K RPG.
Apparnetly there will be 3 installments. Each book will be the same basic rules, but based along a different aspect of the 40K universe.
The first book is based on the inquisitoral view. Lots of detective style work, all int he name of the imperium.
The second book will be based on the Rogue traders. This version of the game will be more adventurous type themes.
The thrid book will be based around the Death Watch. The inquisitorial branch thats much more militarized. In this version of the game, you will essentially see how courageous you can be and probably die gloriously for the emperor alot...
All in all, I'm quite excited....especially for the first installment.
The funny thing is that what I was hoping for was something that I could use to play out Imperial Guard adventures (ala Gaunt's Ghosts) but now I think I'm just as happy with the direction(s) that they're taking this.
