'Ard Boyz Tournament - September 22nd

If you're a hard-core 40K player and looking for some competition, then you'll want to clear your Calendar for the 'Ard Boyz Tournament on September 22nd.

Greenfield Games will be hosting this regional event which will pit players from around the area and their 2500 point armies against one-another for a chance to get to the semi-finals on October 13th. Winners of the semi's get invited to go to Baltimore in November and battle to see who is the best of the best.

Want to find out all of the rules? Then download them here. Then, come into the store and sign up as soon as you can. We need to get an idea of the space we'll need to free up for the event and make arrangements for possible spillover.

The Coming Apocalypse

Maybe you've seen it, and maybe you haven't but Games Workshop has been releasing images of some pretty amazing new stuff for Warhammer 40k coming up this fall.

Probably the most exciting thing is the Apocalypse book. This is going to be all about doing those huge battles that players seem to enjoy so much (and the rules have never supported very well). To go along with this release GW is offering some pretty amazing deals for most of the armies. Things like the Imperial Guard Armored Company - that comes with 10 tanks! And these all have a significant bulk-purchase discount associated with them. Not like the usual "if you buy two you get to pay the same as buying two individual units!"

My personal favorite is the Imperial Guard pack that will hold one of their standard miniature cases, books, dice, etc. AND looks really awesome with its imperial guard logo and military styling. It comes with the Apocalypse book, the new dice, the new templates... essentially everything you need to get started with the exception of 3000 points of army to field.

We have the pre-order sheets on the counter so just come in and have a look then let us know what you want us to get you. We'll get it pre-ordered right away.

More Details on D&D 4th Edition

There have been some seminars here at Gencon discussing the changes coming up for D&D 4th Edition. Beckett from RPG.net has posted all of his notes from the seminar that he attended. I'd post a wrapup here but you're better off just reading it in its original form.

Words and Pictures from Gencon

Hey, I'm really sorry that you all couldn't go to Gencon. I am going to try to share a bit of the experience by posting photos from the show as much as I can. I'll also try to share the news as I hear it.

Of course, the biggest news is that the announcement of the impending release of Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition has happened today. Don't worry, the new edition is a year away. They also talk about the new edition being evolutionary rather than revolutionary. They ARE talking about incorporating online play for the first time through a new Website, DnDInsider.com. Each paper product will include codes to unlock digital versions on the site for a "nominal" activation fee. Players will also be able to use DnDInsider tools and access regular new content similar to the material that was previously released in Dragon and Dungeon magazines for a monthly fee (as yet undetermined) greater than the old subscription price, but less than a MMORPG subscription. Magazine-style content will be added to the site three times a week and compiled into digital "issues" monthly.

New Warmachine Expansions Announced

Privateer Press, Inc. announces the next two expansions for the award-winning tabletop miniatures game, Warmachine.

Following the wild popularity and consistently strong sales of the Mercenary Privateer models detailed in the now out of print No Quarter Magazine issue 12, Privateer Press announces the first installment of a new expansion format - titled Forces of Warmachine - which provides army expansion options under a single theme.

Forces of Warmachine: Pirates of the Broken Coast is scheduled to release in early December and comprises 72 pages of new fiction, new model stats, and several outstanding full-color art pieces by artist Andrea Uderzo. In addition to compiling the previously released Mercenary Privateer models, this book introduces new mercenary warcasters, warjacks, units, and solos for expanding armies of every faction and rules for building pirate-themed armies. Models featured in this book release in December, January, and February. More details and previews of will appear in No Quarter issue 15, releasing this November.

Shortly following the release of Forces of Warmachine: Pirates of the Broken Coast, Privateer Press will release the fifth full installment of the current Warmachine storyline that begun in Warmachine: Prime Remix and continued in the award-winning works Escalation, Apotheosis, and Superiority.

Warmachine: Legends brings the saga of Warmachine to an electrifying climax and provides exciting new options in the form of new warcasters, warjacks, units, solos, and epic warcasters. The book provides all new options for every faction and focuses on the characters, warjacks, and units that have attained legendary status in the world of Warmachine. Warmachine: Legends will release at Gen Con Indy 2008, and previews will begin in No Quarter Magazine #16, available in January.

Painting Night Tonight

Just a quick reminder...

Tonight is our monthly painting night. If you show up with stuff to paint then you're welcome to hang out with us after hours as we commune with our pigments and apply them to our little dudes.

I will, once again, be working on my Imperial Guard army... though not much has happened with it since last month. Which, to me, is the best reason for painting night. If I don't get anything else done during the month I know that I'll get some work done at least one night.

Traveller Returns!

Wow.. this is pretty big news, actually.

Mongoose Publishing is going to be bringing the Traveller game back.

In case you don't already know, Traveller is the grand-daddy of science fiction roleplaying games. It had a long history of regular relases for years. Then, when GDW went belly-up Traveller pretty much did too. Versions of Traveller have appeared since then, but they haven't really been able to recapture the magic of the original. It sounds as if Mongoose Publishing is planning to do this up right.

After a near 10-year gap in which only reprints of the Traveller game system have been available, Mongoose Publishing becomes the centralised resource for Traveller titles with the publication of their core rule book Traveller: Science-Fiction Adventures in the Far Future, in February 2008. On this foundation, Mongoose will produce a supporting line of supplements, adventures, and sourcebooks detailing the official and original Traveller universe of the far future.

The materials published by Mongoose will be placed in and part of the canonical Traveller universe. It is our aim to halt the fragmentation of the Traveller game, and reintroduce one solid system (based on Classic Traveller), with one source for the official Traveller universe.

But that is not all. . .

Mongoose Publishing Science Fiction RPGs

Mongoose will also be using Traveller in its licensed science-fiction properties (each featuring a Traveller logo). We have pioneered this concept already with Runequest, publishing a rules set and supporting adventures and sourcebooks, then using the Runequest rules as the basis for other alternative fantasy role-playing settings, such as Hawkmoon, Elric and Lankhmar.

The first licensed setting to be produced using the Traveller rules set (and available in early 2008) will be Starship Troopers, a welcome return to bug-blasting action across the galaxy! Hot on its heels will be Strontium Dogs, based on the hit 2000AD comic strip. After that, who knows. . ?

To the greatest extent possible, we intend that there be a transportability of characters, concepts, and even equipment between the various systems. So, it will be perfectly possible for your Strontium Dog Bounty Hunter to land on a planet in his Scout/Courier, only to find him battling for his life against waves of Warrior Bugs – with no conversion needed between the games!

All games and settings will therefore be able to utilise the core supplements, such as High Guard, Mercenary, and 760 Patrons, while retaining their own character.Open Gaming LicenseOnce the rules for Traveller appear, we plan to make them available under the Open Gaming License (OGL). At the same time, we will issue a Traveller Logo License (TLL) which makes the Traveller logo and titling available to licensees.
Far Future will Publish T5
Far Future is proceeding with plans to produce the long-heralded Traveller5, initially as an extensive CD ROM package (estimated at 1000 pages) by the end of 2007, and a distilled 350-page Traveller5 Core Rules book in the first half of 2008.T5 will be a superset of the Mongoose Traveller rules, providing detailed coverage of rules, concepts and history not available elsewhere. There will be cross-compatibility between Traveller and Traveller5, allowing you to use rules and supplements from each.Traveller will be faithful to Classic Traveller, with an upgraded task and combat system. Traveller5 will be a superset of those rules, providing greater detail and more insight into resolving situations in Traveller.
